Art with Ms. Kim

Artists have been learning about shape and color, exploring these elements of art through a variety of different materials and experiences.
  • Kindergarten created a rainbow cityscape collage demonstrating the order of colors in the rainbow (ROYGBIV) and learned about warm and cool colors to create an oil pastel and watercolor resist inspired by winter mittens.
  • 1st Grade learned about Henri Matisse's painted paper cutouts and painted paper, using their color mixing exploration knowledge, to cut out geometric and organic shapes for their own collage.
  • 2nd Grade created mixed media collages inspired by the work of Mexican American artist Carmen Lomas Garza, showing a tradition or experience they have had with their family.
  • 3rd Grade learned about tertiary colors, a combination of primary and secondary colors, to mix colors to paint a 12 section color wheel and created a collage using the color wheel. We also mixed our own colors, came up with creative names for them and shared them with the class.
  • 4th Grade is creating an outer space theme resist artwork, using oil pastel and watercolors, to demonstrate the use of analogous colors to help create the illusion of 3D forms.
  • 5th Grade is learning about atmospheric or aerial perspective, and painting landscapes using monochromatic tints and shades to show distance.

Physical Education with Mrs. Bartlett & Mrs. Fitzgerald

This month students have been introduced to some amazing skills that can be used in a number of different activities!

In grades 3-5, students have been working on some hockey skills.  These skills include passing, stick handling, shooting, and positioning in the game.  The students practiced these skills in some fun and active ways and then incorporated them into some modified games!  The students did a fantastic job of demonstrating these skills, while also demonstrating teamwork, sportsmanship, and safety while playing!

Students in grades K-2, finished up by exploring pathways (straight, zig-zag, curved, spiral, ect.).  The students practiced the pathways by moving in open space and then we moved into some fun activities to reinforce them.  We did some tag games, followed “maps” with combined pathways, and finished up with Create a Pathway!  In this activity, students created their own pathways using different pieces of equipment and then explored each other’s pathway.  We were even able to add equipment (scooter, basketball, etc.) to move through the pathways at different levels!

Passing to the slot and then a shot!
Practicing Stick Handling!

Spanish with Sra. Navas y Señorita O

Hosmer Spanish teachers:
  • Robyn Long-Navas (Señora Navas) robyn.longnavas@watertown.k12.ma.us
  • Heather Olafsson (Señorita O) heather.olafsson@watertown.k12.ma.us

Kindergarten: Our youngest learners continue to explore the world through colors! We are reading books such as "Brown Bear Brown Bear, What Do You See?" 📖🐻 by Bill Martin, Jr. and “The Magical Skies of Sumpango" by Kimberly Matthis Pitts (Los Cielos Mágicos de Sumpango) in Spanish to talk about colors. Students have been learning about a kite festival in Guatemala and describing colors in Spanish. We are also playing games and singing lots of songs to practice the colors.

First grade: We have been acting out these actions in games like charades, and singing the song Vengan Ya. Students are also learning about parts of our school, such as the art room and music room, as well as the materials they use in each part of the school and the actions we do there.

Second grade: Students are learning to describe their schedules at school. Ask your child: What classes do you have in the morning? /¿Qué clases tienes por la mañana? y What classes do you have in the afternoon? /¿Qué clases tienes por la tarde?

Third grade: In third grade we are or will be talking about Ritchie Valens and his famous song: "La Bamba." Students are able to share basic information from his life, like how old he was, where he lived, when his birthday was and what he liked to do. Soon they will be sharing the same information about themselves!

Fourth grade: Fourth graders are talking about birthdays! In Special Person interviews, games, songs and other activities, we are reviewing the months of the year, numbers 1-31 and asking each other when their birthdays are.

Fifth grade: Fifth graders are continuing to practice describing themselves and others. Students are learning to talk in the third person by describing students in the class and famous people such as Anthony González- the actor who plays Miguel in the movie “Coco” whose family is from Guatemala and Mexico. We are answering questions such as: ¿Cuantos años tiene?/ How old is he? ¿Dónde vive? /Where does he live? ¿De dónde es?/ Where is he from? ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? /When is his birthday? etc.
¡ Los cumpleaños! Third graders asking each other what their birthday months are in Spanish!
¡Los colores! Kindergarteners playing a color game! Students listened to the teacher say colors and put a clothes pin on the color they heard!
Interview with Ritchie Valens! Third graders role-play Ritchie Valens and a reporter to talk about basic facts of his life.
