At Hosmer, we have many students whose native language is Spanish. After living in the US, students may start to feel less confident with their Spanish skills. Last year, Yensi, a student at Hosmer, expressed her concern about “forgetting Spanish”. Inspired by this, a group was formed with the goal of offering Latino students at the Hosmer the opportunity to talk in their native language, Spanish, as well as to help students recognize and value the gift of being bilingual and bicultural.
Latino Students, in the grades 3 and 5, were recruited and we were able to form a good-sized Spanish lunch group. We meet twice a week during our shared lunch time to informally chat. Sometimes we talk about our culture, traditions and families, and other times the students feel like they want to catch up with things that they don’t have the chance to learn in Spanish, such as letter names, how to say high numbers, reading and even some tongue twisters and rhymes. We all learn from each other and have a good time.
En la escuela Hosmer tenemos muchos estudiantes cuya lengua materna es el español. Viviendo en Estados Unidos, estos estudiantes pueden sentirse inseguros al hablar español. El año pasado, Yensi, una estudiante de la escuela Hosmer, expresó su preocupación de estar olvidando el español. Esta fue la inspiración para formar un grupo de estudiantes Latinos con el objetivo de darles la oportunidad de hablar español en la escuela y de ayudarles a reconocer y valorar el don de ser bilingüe y bicultural.
Se reclutaron estudiantes de tercer y quinto grado y así formamos un grupo de almuerzo en español. Nos reunimos dos veces por semana para charlar informalmente. A veces hablamos de temas de nuestra cultura, tradiciones y vida familiar. Otras veces los y las estudiantes prefieren enfocarse en temas que no han tenido oportunidad de aprender en español, como por ejemplo, las letras en español, cómo decir números altos en español, trabalenguas y rimas, y un poco de lectura. Aprendemos uno del otro en el grupo y pasamos un buen momento.
