For the past several months, Hosmer faculty has been engaging in professional development around making space for these types of conversations, particularly those involving issues of race and identity. As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, this work has included learning about how race awareness develops in children and how to have "clarifying and brave conversations" with students in developmentally appropriate ways. Here is an article with similar themes and advice that is geared more towards parents. I hope that you may find helpful: Anti-Racism for Kids: An Age-by-Age Guide to Fighting Hate (Parents Magazine).

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black History Month+
In the upcoming weeks, we will be celebrating both Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black History Month+ in a number of ways, including:

classroom-based learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and/or Kingian Principles
learning about Contemporary Black Changemakers during Morning Announcements
participation in districtwide and community initiatives - Kingian Principles Scavenger Hunt (more to come next week), support for the Watertown Unity Breakfast, and opportunities for students to creatively express their learnings
