Upstander Training for Grade 4 & 5

Posted Date: 11/06/26 (10:42 AM)

Students in grades 4 and 5 had Upstander Training this week. Presented by Margaret Kiwanuka-Woernle (Restorative Practices Specialist), Nnamdi Okaka (Student Leadership Development Coordinator) and guest presenters from Wayside Youth and Family Services, the training focuses on anti-bullying.

Students learned how to be upstanders and practiced using the CALM method through fun, interactive activities. CALM stands for Call it out, Ask after (have empathy and check on your peers), Let someone know & Make an exit. Your student will practice using each skill and discuss the best times to use each technique. They also received a bracelet that says “Upstanders stay CALM” reminding and empowering them throughout the year to stand up for their peers and themselves. Students practiced breathing exercises they can use to regulate when stressed. Please ask your student about the training and continue the conversation at home!
