October 2018

October 1, 2018

Dear Hosmer Families,

October usually means cooler temperatures in the morning and warmer afternoons. That often means your child comes to school with a coat and may forget it at recess! Please stop by if you are having a hard time finding outer clothing items as they may have ended up in our lost and found. The table is located under the stairwell in the lobby.

iReady testing will be completed in the next day or two and soon your child may be doing some homework activities related to this program. Feel free to speak or write to your child’s teacher for more information.

I will hold my monthly Principal chat on Wednesday October 24th at 8:30 AM in the cafeteria. If you would like to stop by to hear about current events or if you have a question, this would be the right forum. In addition, our curriculum coordinators may have some useful insights that would be of interest to you.

We had some nice gains in our 2018 MCAS results and though we have room to improve we are happy with the progress.

Grade 5 ELA went up 21%, Math went up 9%, and Science went up 10%.

Grade 4 ELA went up 15% and Math went up 15%.

Grade 3 ELA went up 20% and Math dropped 10%.

The gains do not reflect specific cohorts but rather grade level improvement. We are pulling growth per cohort and will share that information once it is in easy to read form. I would attribute the gains to having appropriate curriculum with adequate professional development for teachers. If we can maintain this progress I anticipate being in very good shape soon.

Finally, please join the PTO for it’s monthly meeting as there are some fun and interesting things coming up for families.

Thank you,

Mr. LaRoche
